Consumer Review: Creatine Gave Me Kidney Pain And Diarrhea.

I am 17 years old and like everyone I want to get bigger and stronger: about six months ago I was on creatine for 3 weeks I definitely felt the "pumped" feeling from water retention but did not gain much on my lifts and shortly after the diarrhea was just unbearable and I actually did feel PAIN in my kidneys so I stopped using it. This last week I picked up on a different kind the effervescent creatine and I have made notable progress in 3 days but after what happened to me and all I have read unless I see SIGNIFICANT gains in mass and strength when I finish the 20 packets I will STOP for good. I guess you could call it a biology experiment I want to see if it actually works. Thanks for everyone's input but I would like to here for a qualified MD.

I sell, and use creatine monohydrate. I will admit that some of my customers and myself have had stomach pains. This is the first case I heard of someone getting the diarrhea. I think there are several things you need to evaluate. Your age, you might not be physically ready to handle creatine. Do you know how to follow directions? I am not coming down on you, but I find a lot of people do not know how to follow specific directions that are on supplement bottles. You might be taking too much. Always read the bottle carefully. Make sure you are consuming plenty of water. I drink two gallons of water a day to ensure that my kidneys will be able to process the creatine I am orally ingesting and to prevent cramping. Also, drinking cranberry juice can help with that. The final thing is what kind of creatine are you using? I find that some of the creatine products bother my stomach. I have tried many supplements and I have found some bother my stomach and some don't. It's different strokes for different folks. Creatine is a great product and has helped me and others out a lot.

It gave you kidney pain maybe because you take too much. There are even some people who don't absorb it and taking it makes matters worse. I mean 1 scoop or 2 is enough. Wanting to hurry up things is bad. Just let it take its course.

Creatine is something that everyone and their mom knows about "these days." Wow, "these days." You know It's funny, creatine HAS NOT BEEN AROUND VERY LONG PEOPLE! Just maybe we are at the ten year mark. Before that it was horse testosterone. Look, be careful with what you put in your body, it is a delicate thing you know. Ten years from now, people might be having kidney failures left and right because of this stuff. Let nature take its course. Don't use it.

I definitely understand your feeling about the diarrhea. I have used it for only two days, and I have had unbearable diarrhea. I was told to take four tablespoons (I am about 155 lbs) for the loading period, and I cannot even handle it. I am thinking about taking just 1 scoop a day--anything more than two and I will diarrhea myself to death!

Response #5

I can attest to the fact that if you misread the directions, and take four heaping tablespoons at once, instead of one four times a day (for the loading period) the result is EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA.

I found this out today, after over-ingesting creatine for three days. It's painless, but completely unnatural diarrhea, and I'm hoping I didn't just smoke my kidneys.

I also took creatine three years ago and had very positive gains in a short amount of time with no side effects, but got stretch marks on my armpits, which I've had since. I consider creatine a "last resort" measure, and took it again recently because I was so out of shape after not lifting for a year.

Bottom line: This stuff is no herbal tea -- it causes major imbalances in your body chemistry if not taken carefully. If you need to use it, under-dosing is probably the rule. Throw away the bottle when you're finished and don't use it again for another year...two if you can hold out.
