Consumer Review: Creatine May Have Contributed To Seizures That Put My Husband In The Hospital.

Well, I don't know where to start here, but let me introduce myself. I am a 29 year old female who does not work out or take supplements, but my husband DID.

About 3 months ago, he was in the emergency room and inpatient at the hospital for 3 days for having a "grand mal" seizure. For those of you who don't know what that is, it is a very scary, convulsive seizure. He has had a number of tests--CT scan, MRI, EEG, blood work, chest X-ray. He was taking supplements. All "EAS" protein shakes, Creatine, Hydroxy Cut. Taking them as directed I suppose. Two weeks prior to this seizure he had stopped taking everything. I don't recall why. I don't think there was actually a particular reason. My husband (as far as we knew) was very healthy before this seizure. Since the seizure, he has been told he is hypoglycemic (low sugar) and pretty much feels like sh-- every other day.

We just saw his neurologist, and my husband told him he was taking the protein shakes...thinking it may help him feel better along with eating well, etc. The neuro asked him if he took anything else like creatine. My husband told him he did before the seizure, but stopped 2 weeks prior to having it. Now, mind you, I have been checking everything that I possibly could to find out why this happened to him to get answers, and yesterday the neuro told us he just saw a patient that had a seizure and was on creatine. No full details, but my husband and I never even thought about it. Looking back now, it makes sense. He works out 3x a week for about 3 years now I think and only took creatine the days he lifted and wasn't on it for that long.

We will never know what actually caused that seizur, but I'll tell you what--when he was in the hospital, he looked very ill/possibly jaundice. We never mentioned it to the doctors about the supplements. Didn't think anything of it. I'll tell you what though, he said he'll never take any of the supplements again. Just my 2 cents.

Response #1

I am so sorry that happened to your husband. I am 21 years old, and my husband is a weight "FREAK." He works out 6 times a week, and has been taking MRP 44 and micronized creatine and other supplements for the muscle media contest. Every time he takes the creatine he gets real dizzy. He can't understand it, and I tell him if it is making him dizzy, stop taking it. But what can you tell a man who is consumed with getting BIGGER!! Did your husband ever get dizzy after taking creatine? I would love to hear from you or anyone else who has input. THANKS!
