Consumer Review: I Had Asthma-Like Symptoms After Taking Creatine.

I am 21 years old and started a 4 week cycle of EAS brand creatine about a year ago, and repeated it 2 months later. I have found after coming off my last cycle I am experiencing the same type of asthma-like symptoms. I have seen a lung specialist and have been given Proventil and it does seem to help somewhat. My doctor has also found that I have a heart murmur that has appeared out of no where, but this may just be something that was missed when I was young. Anyway, I was definitely happy with the supplement and was considering going back on it until I read about other people experiencing similar problems.

I see that some are saying that when they go back on it their breathing goes back to normal, I wonder if this has anything to do with the body stopping production of natural creatine and causing a dependence on the supplement. I have recently just stuck to a protein supplement and some hard training and it working just fine for me. But since these problems started I've noticed my performance in the gym is not as good. Work-out hard and be careful but get off the creatine before we damage ourselves anymore!

Response #1

How much were you taking? Were you doing 4 weeks on 4 weeks off? Have you lost any muscle size that you built?

Response #2

You might be overloading compared to the workouts that you do. Meaning, you take in more than what is needed for lifting to beef up.

Response #3

I have had an asthma condition since I was a kid. In response to creatine, loading for the first week of 10 grams a day made me feel like I was gasping for air every time I worked out. As I progressed in my workouts, I cut down on the grams of creatine that I take before working out. For now I take about 2-3 grams of creatine (capsules) 30-45 minutes before working out and cycle it 3 months on and 1 month off (never load on it when starting again). Since then, I haven't had the asthma-like symptoms, I only get asthma when I get sick. I've never felt better and stronger and so far have gained 10lbs of muscle. The only thing I recommend is to take protein right after working out and drink plenty of water (2-2.5 gallons a day). Hope this helps.
