Creatine Side Effects

Consumer Review: I Am 16 Years Old, Male, And Have Been Taking Creatine Monohydrate For About A Year Now.

I am 16 years old, male, and have been taking creatine monohydrate for about a year now. I went from 150 to 170 pounds in that time. I can't gain anymore weight. I've also been hearing a lot about the side effects to creatine, are these true? Some examples are the muscles tearing and ripping and the kidneys being overworked by creatine. Help me to get through this stage and answer my questions about the safety of creatine monohydrate.

Response #1

I am 16 years old too and I used creatine in the summer. I am 6'2. During the summer, I went from 175 to 190. I kept putting weight on, but I kept drinking more water. I think if you keep increasing your water intake, you will keep gaining weight. I have read on the effects of creatine on your kidneys. I am not sure if I am right, but I don't think creatine will overwork your kidneys because excess creatine is excreted.

I am also 16 years old and do many sports like football, wrestling, and track and field. I began using creatine after football season since I got shoved around at only 140 pounds. I normally went to the weight room 5 times a week and was stronger than most people in my grade(10th). I only used Creatine for three weeks. I went into the weight room for 2 hours, 6 days a week. In that time, I also did wrestling. I wasn't even tired. I always had energy. At the end of the three weeks I gained 6 pounds on a normal diet and increased in size and strength.

I am 19 years old and have been taking creatine monohydrate on and off for a bout 2 years now. At first I was taking some stuff that was a TOTAL RIPOFF. I realized that some creatine is actually FAKE. You have to be careful what you buy. My recommendation is that you buy brand name creatine only.

Also, after doing some research and reading and from personal experience, I've found that creatine works best if I load for about 5 days, take a maintenance dosage for a month, stop taking it for a few days and then restart the cycle by reloading. This is basically how I broke my obnoxious 3-month plateau. As far as safety is concerned, there has been and immense amount of scientific research that suggests that creatine is a helpful supplement w/respect to bodybuilding. Consult the 1997 Sports Supplement Review, hell it is free. It has some good stuff in it. There is simply NO PROOF that suggests that creatine is harmful. If you tell me creatine is harmful, you'd better prove yourself somehow.

Response #4

I'm 18 years old and have taken creatine monohydrate in the pure form and with transport systems. I've found that muscle tearing has been less of a problem with creatine and the stretch marks on my skin I was expecting to receive (w/out creatine I get them) weren't around. However, there is minor pain where the kidneys are if you don't drink lots of water/liquids (maybe it's the love handles forming). I went from 210-250 in 1 and a half months. Just thought I would share my experience and if there's a doctor out there reading this, I would appreciate any help with the side effects question.

Response #3 says, "There is simply NO PROOF that suggests that creatine is harmful. If you tell me creatine is harmful, you'd better prove yourself somehow."

The tobacco industry rode this sort of logic for years. Most good studies take years (sometimes generations) and interpretation, especially in the early stages, is open to manipulation. I look forward to long term studies, not sponsored (indirectly, of course) by companies cashing in on the creatine craze.
