Question: Does Glucosamine Cause Side Effects?

I am attempting to learn more about the possible side effects of glucosamine. I am a mild hypoglycemic and control the problem by diet. However, I would like to know what the possible side effects might be for this health product?

Though everything I've perused on the Net has spoken of very little detrimental side effects to Glucosamine -- I tried it twice, and by the 3rd day I was coming out of my skin! I'm not sure, but I think it affected my insulin levels (blood sugar). I felt VERY weird in my head -- mentally/perceptually.

After the pill ran its course, the weirdness would subside and I would return to normal. I gave it the good ol' college try twice. I was OK for the first couple of days, but then it started to affect me...so, I just don't get it. I've got a very bad back (arthritis and disc disease, etc.) and I've heard such great reports about this supplement (along with Chondroitin). I guess it's just not for me. If you've got blood sugar problems, I'd check with your doctor.

I had a similar experience with glucosamine. I got very lightheaded and I had to eat a candy bar. I also have hypoglycemia. It felt just like a hypoglucemic attack.

Answer #3

Any time you have a health condition and want to try an herbal product you need to check with your doctor BEFORE using it. Not everyone will have the same results from a product, so if the doctor says it's safe for you and you want to try it then you should. Also, not all products containing glucosamine are equal. If you tried one and it didn't work or caused a problem ask your doctor if it could be something else in the product and if so try something else.

I have been using MSM for some time, with very good results. I recently ran low on the pure MSM powder, and to tide me over I picked up a product which had both MSM and glucosamine in a capsule. I have been using them for four days, and every day (7-8 hours after ingestion) I have gotten heartburn, followed by a light-headed dizziness which is most disconcerting. Since I have excellent results with MSM, with *zero* negative side-effects, I will discontinue using the glucosamine and stick to the pure MSM powder.

To anyone with arthritis or joint problems, or fibromyalgia -- I strongly recommend MSM. It greatly reduces pain, and in many cases, swelling, and the only side effects are softer skin, stronger hair and nails, and improved digestion... It also eases the effects of allergies and asthma. I recommended it to a massage therapist, and he said after just a few days of using MSM the aches he was subject to after treating people were greatly reduced.

I'm giving glucosamine a miss, but I cannot sing the praises of MSM loudly enough! It's cheap, easy to use, is *very* safe (it has the same 'lethal dose' as water), and helps in a wide range of ailments. Read up on it.

I took one single tablet of glucosamine to lessen arthritic pain. Not only was the pain not less, but I became nauseated and felt generally "woozie." Do others have this experience?

Answer #6

When I first decided to try glucosamine for very slight arthritis pain, I started with just one capsule of 500 mg a day. When that didn't have a bad effect and seemed to help, I went to two capsules, one at breakfast and one at dinner. After a few more months, I added a third capsule at lunch, to bring me up to the recommended dosage of 1500 mg a day. After a couple of months of the full dose, I noticed that in the afternoon I would feel a little lightheaded or "spacey". It took me a couple of weeks to figure out that it may have been due to the glucosamine. I immediately stopped taking it, and within about three or four days, the lightheadedness disappeared. I'm going to have to find something else to take for the arthritis, but it won't be glucosamine.

Answer #7

I took a glucosamine pill (500 mg) today for the first time, and I have felt dizzy and out of it all day. I came to this site to see what others had said. I was surprised that others had had similar reactions. I was under the impression that glucosamine was safe, but I don't like being dizzy and half stoned all day. For the record, I am a 22 year old male in good health, but I have stiff knees and thought glucosamine might help.

I have what has been termed "reactive low blood sugar" for lack of a better term.

I tried glucosamine-chondroitin for about three weeks. Some time during the first week, I had a very weird experience while walking. I felt as if I was not touching the ground. In addition, I had a severe hypoglycemic attack, becoming extremely warm and shaky.

I had been taking a vitamin-mineral-herb supplement for several years, despite its warning that hypoglycemics and diabetics should check first with a physician. When I had this experience, I attributed it to the vitamin and stopped it...after which I had no further events.

I suspect it was the combination. I do think that the glucosamine-chondroitin supplement has helped the joint problems. However, I had to stop that also after less than three weeks because of some other problems with an antibiotic. When my system returns to normal, I do plan to try the glucosamine-chondroitin again. If I have another reaction, I'll try the MSM.
