I was relieved and horrified to find a comment about a suspected
link between Hydroxycut and Multiple Sclerosis. My mother was a
serious body builder and took Hydroxycut according to the directions
for over one year (with a week break every two months or so). She
was taking creatine as well, but otherwise got her nutrition from
an impeccable (i.e.: very healthy, balanced) diet.
About six months after she stopped taking Hydroxycut, she suddenly
developed SEVERE symptoms of MS at 51 years of age, with no prior
symptoms at all. She was running 10km one day, and the next she
couldn't feel her left leg. Within a week, she was losing function
of her bowels, feeling numbness in her torso and began to have
vision problems. Two weeks later, the doctors thought she might
have respiratory failure and die. She did bounce back (as MS patients
do once her crisis was over) to a level of health that was stable,
but the damage was done. Her health has steadily deteriorated
since then. She was finally diagnosed with MS after a lot of tests
spanning years, only to have recently become a mystery to her
team of specialists. A series of MRIs over two years convinced
doctors that she had MS, but suddenly they don't know what's going
on.
When she first got sick, she was showing what would normally
be years of deterioration for an MS patient in just a single week,
and now her disease isn't doing what it is "supposed to".
The doctors now think that something else was at play when she
had her first "crisis" but don't know what. To them
she has MS because all her scans say that she does- they can't
find that it could be anything else, but the disease is not progressing
the way it should. We strongly suspect Hydroxycut of having played
a role in this.
Please be careful. I have seen what is happening to my mother,
and 5, 10, 15, 20 lbs of fat loss are not worth it. She can't
walk, she is tired all the time, her vision is failing, her organs
have gone haywire. She lies on the floor and cries, horrified
that a supplement might have done this- something she took willingly.
Even the suspicion of Hydroxycut should make you pause.
Also, I realize that the Hydroxycut formula that my mother took
is no longer available in Canada (is it still available in the
US?, Europe?), but if anyone else has a similar story, please
post it.
