Question: How Much Protein Is Considered Bad For Your Health?

I am currently on a high protein low carb diet. How much protein is considered bad for your health? I know it can affect your kidneys. Would whey protein be considered just as bad?

As a general rule, humans should not consume more than 150 grams of protein per day. After that, the human kidneys become very stressed and can begin to fail.

A family member used a whey protein drink and lost hair (the technical term is alopecia). I researched it and found it was possibly due to the protein drink. It can sometimes cause blockages in your lymph system.

1)For most people, there is no such thing as too much protein; Protein has NOT been found to CAUSE liver and/or kidney dysfunction in HUMANS.

2) Protein CAN possibly aggravate a PRE-EXISTING liver or kidney condition

I would like to dispel a very common misconception among people in the fitness community. That misconception is that too much protein is bad for your body. In reality, protein is handled by your digestive system like any other food. The human digestive system is perfectly capable of adapting itself to absorb whatever you put in it (protein included).

The idea that the kidneys and/or liver suffer from an excess of protein stems from experiments done on rats. These rats were placed on high-protein diets, and over time were found to develop a serious kidney disease called "nephrocalcinosis". This information was taken and studied in humans, and to date, there is ABSOLUTELY no evidence that points to the occurrence of this disease in otherwise healthy humans as related to protein consumption.

On the other hand, if you have a PRE-EXISTING liver and/or kidney problem, it IS TRUE that an excess of protein can exacerbate the problem further. Of course, individuals who have liver and/or kidney problems in the first place should ALWAYS consult a physician before starting ANY diet. Bottom line: if you are concerned about your liver or kidneys, ring up your trusty physician, explain your concern, and he or she will check you out to make sure you are free of any kidney and liver impairments.

If you do not take more than 750g of protein a day, you should be fine. Take about 0.7g to 1.4g of protein for each pound you weigh (example: I am 150 lbs and should take from 105g/day to 210g/day of protein).
