I am looking for information on Saint John's Wort. A co-worker of mine suffers from effects of PMS and is seeking as much info as possible on this supplement. Specifically, could you send me info on the contents of this supplement, uses for it and side effects associated with it. I appreciate you taking the time to send this information to me.

I don't know your friends age, but there is a book called Menopausal Years - The Wise Woman Way by Susun S. Weed that has several references to the benefits of St. John's Wort as well as other herbs that are extremely beneficial for all types of "female conditions". I myself take St. John's every day. I can't tell you how much it helps to keep my life in perspective! I wish your friend well and hope that she checks this book out. It is invaluable advice to all women of all ages.

The term PMS is used to mean different things by different people. If by PMS your friend means physical-type symptoms, she may be helped by St. John's. If her symptoms run more to emotional upheaval, like irritability, my guess is that she might benefit some, but will not find true relief. It is my experience that severe PMS, which might more accurately be referred to as PMD (pre-menstrual depression) cannot be controlled by St. John's wort. I say this because I took 1200 mg (double the suggested dosage) for over a month in hope of a more natural remedy. I had to concede that SSRI medication was the better answer for me.
