St. John's Wort

I was on meds for depression for four years. It worked very well
for me, making a radical difference in my life, lifting chronic
depression I now realize I suffered from since childhood. It is,
however, expensive, costing nearly $75 per month, not including
the regular visits to the doctor for check-ups, which were perfunctory
and, in my opinion, largely unnecessary. And, being a great believer
in herbal and non-traditional medicine, I started to feel uncomfortable
about supporting the medical-industrial complex, especially the
drug companies, which I feel have caused tremendous harm to many
people. So I decided to give St. John's Wort (which my wife and
I, who both hate the Catholic/christian Church, call "Sister
Joan's Wort") a try.
I have used it now for over a year and I can say that, for me,
it works as well as the meds at less than 1/3 the cost. The only
"side effects" (unwanted primary effects) I have noticed
are (1) a slight flushing sensation in my face after moderate
exposure to the sun and (2) occasional irregular heart beats (palpitations)
which, incidentally, are exactly the same as I used to get on
the meds. (These palpitations are effectively alleviated by Kava
Kava.)

I also found that my depression symptoms decreased with the use of St John's Wort. I had no side effects, but I do recommend asking a doctor before taking any supplements.
