Question: Is St. John's Wort Safe For Pediatric Usage?

I need information in regards to the safety of St. John's Wort for pediatric usage. I have a 9 year old son and was wondering if the herb has been used for ADHD. Antidepressants have been used as not the drug of choice, but one if the stimulant meds don't work

Question expanded by another reader.
I, also, have a 9 year old son. I was thinking of trying St. John's Wort. Will this help ADHD and are there any side effects? Stimulants didn't work, but brought out ticks (uncontrollable muscle movements), will St. John's Wort have side effects like that?

Answer #1

I'm an RN and I did use St. John's Wort for my ADHD son for a few months. It seemed to work, but I had a hard time getting him to take them. I gave him 900mg a day and the pills are big. He was 13 and weighed about 110 at that time. It took 3 pills. The school noticed a change in him when he was on it. Remember anti depressant type drugs frequently take a while to kick in (days or weeks). Be sure to check a good herbal remedy book so you can dose him for his weight and age. Also, you'll need to research which St. John's is good stuff. We had good luck with the health food store brands but not with the grocery store brands. Good Luck!
