Consumer Review: I Experienced Pain, Tingling And A Pins & Needles Sensation While On St. John's Wort.

I have been taking St. John's Wort for about six months. This summer I started experiencing pain, tingling, and pins and needle feelings in my hands and feet especially when my hands and feet were in cold or warm water. The only thing that I could think of was that I was in the sun a lot more this summer. I was wondering if there are any contraindications with St. John's Wort and food or the sun. I reduced the amount I was taking and I seem to be better. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you.

I saw a 2 sentence article in a newspaper recently that mentioned nerve damage in connection to the known photo toxicity effects of SJW. I developed various burning and tingling sensations last winter after having used SJW for 11 months. I stopped SJW just under a month ago, but the tingling in my hands, feet and private parts continues. Two neurosurgeons and two neurologists have have found a possible structural cause for some of my symptoms---but none of them believe we have found the root of my problem. Your letter and the recent article make me very suspicious of the SJW.

I have done a little reading about Saint John's Wart and I have read that if the amount you are taking is too high then this skin irritation and sensitivity to the sun will occur. Talk to a doctor about your needed amount.

I am so glad I found your message. I started taking St. John's Wort about a month ago and within 2 weeks started having tingling in my hands and feet. I don't know if it's the holiday stress or the SJW. I stopped taking the supplement and am hoping that the sensation goes away.

I have noticed since taking St. Johns Wort, muscle and nerve pain throughout my body. My eyes turned heavy black underneath. I have terrible muscle pain and, when I quit taking the supplement, this all cleared up sufficiently to tell me that this supplement isn't for everyone. There should be more information out about this supplement and the adverse reactions some of us have gone through. I don't believe this is the miracle drug everyone has been waiting for because you have to take it for some time before getting any relief up in your head, or depressive state, which might be a placebo effect in my estimation.

I understand my symptoms are not isolated. My daughter also had a negative reaction to St John's Wort, so possibly more information should be supplied to the public before taking it. The adverse reaction can be likened to a flu-like symptom with aching muscles and nausea. Also headache, and just plain feeling terrible. I advised my daughter to quit taking the supplement and her symptoms stopped in about a week's time. By the way, I don't feel any more relaxed on this supplement and would advise anyone taking it to tell their physician about it. If you notice something wrong after taking it, stop it immediately.

This is very interesting. I started taking St John's Wort for moderate to mild depression about 6 months ago. Within the past few months, I have experienced muscle pain and the occasional headache (I am not prone to them usually). However, the most unusual symptom is pins and needles starting in my hands and radiating into my forearms, particularly on the left side. Somehow, instinctively I felt it might be the St John's Wort, and after reading these references I am certain that this is the cause.
