Training Question: How Can I Lose 40 Pounds?

I am overweight by 40 pounds. Can you recommend a plan/formula to lose weight while working out and using supplements. I have mild high blood pressure. I am attending a gym. I am 49 years old, hispanic, and 5'8" . The only medicine I take is for high blood pressure (Hytrin). Please let me know.

Sincerely,
Atzael H.

The best way to lose the weight and keep it off is to change your eating habits (maybe gradually) to low fat healthy eating and do aerobic exercises 3-5 times weekly for 10-20 minutes if beginner and 30-60 minutes if you have been on a good exercise program already.

A really good way to lose weight (and it seems like time flies by) is to start in a sport that you enjoy ex: volleyball, basketball, running, biking, etc.. That way you'll stick with it longer and enjoy doing it.

That is correct the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to join a recreation that you enjoy. I use to weigh 215 pounds I am 24 years old. I joined ball hockey in the winter and did a lot of mountain biking in the summer. Along with that, I took creatine and protein powders and I now weigh 190 pounds and am looking amazing. 25 pounds in 1 year and so far is staying off. Play sports and eat healthy.

My situation was similar--42 years old, taking blood pressure medicine, but I was morbidly obese at 296.5 pounds. I enrolled in a fitness and weight loss program at a local hospital that included a membership in their gym. Since I lost 106.5 pounds in about 11 months and don't have to take the BP meds anymore, I heartily recommend this kind of approach.

Find something similar near you that includes an evaluation (blood tests, percent body fat, etc.), nutrition counseling (food diary and evaluations, sessions on low-fat eating, how to eat out and not blow your regimen, etc.), and exercise planning. The people at the Wellness Center I went to were very supportive and at the weekly sessions you could talk to others about the challenges everyone faces. It's a lifestyle change, not a diet that you shuck after 3 months. I am coming up on my 1-year anniversary for reaching my goal weight and I have kept it off. By the way, I take only a multivitamin and extra Vitamin E--no supplements. I also didn't eliminate carbs or any kinds of foods, except deep-fried stuff. The program I did was called "FitWeigh" and it is available in other places. Go for it!
