Training Question: Why Do My Cuts, Muscle Definition And Striations Disappear As Soon As I Leave The Gym?

I am a 31 year old male. I used to weigh 285, 5 years ago. I am now 195 at 5"11' and 9% body fat. I started out going to the gym 7 days a week, but eight months into that I started getting tired on my sixth day. I then started going 5 days a week, but that also made me very tired and I was not able to push myself as hard as I wanted to. Now I am down to 3 days a week and have energy for lifting, but I used to do aerobic exercise after lifting (stair climber 30 to 45 minutes) too, but started getting very nauseated while doing it and the rest of the day afterward. So now I don't do any of it.

The problem I have is I always look flat. The only time I look and feel good is when I am lifting. Why is this? I watch everything I eat. I am 9% fat, so I have to be doing something right. I am not weak for my weight. My best lift is the dumbbell press, and I can get the 110lbs for 3 sets of 6. When I am in the gym, my vascularity is crazy. I have great striations and definition in my chest, shoulders and arms. But an hour after that, it's over. My cuts are gone and I look flat! What is going on here? I do not eat too many carbs at all because I am extremely afraid of getting FAT AGAIN. I eat a lot of protein and some fat.

One more thing, this is kind of personal, but what the hell. Two years ago, I had problems performing in bed. I had a blood test done and it was found that my testosterone was low (how low, not sure). I was given a shot of testosterone to bring my levels back up. I guess it did because I'm not having that kind of trouble anymore. But I had another test done about 3 months ago and I feel they are low. The doctor feels they are okay and will not prescribe me anything for it. Below you will find my levels. Tell me what you think.

Prolactin, Serum 12.9
Testosterone, Total 323
TSH 1.200

Would you please try to help me out here?

Hi there, I'm only a 14 year old who weight trains seriously, but I think I might be able to answer your questions. Number one, carbohydrates are a good thing, and as long as you're going to the gym, you won't have to worry about gaining fat. I can right now give you all the details and stuff that I've learned about losing fat, but I won't, because it's way too much. All I can say is that 9% body fat is excellent, and you don't need to worry about a thing, because the only way you would gain that fat back is by not going to the gym at all.

I can also tell you why you're getting tired and are not able to work as hard as before. It's because you've been over training. What I do is train 3 times a week, not all 7 days...that's just not good, so watch the amount of time you spend training in the gym. You should go 3-4 times a week MAX, and do TONS of cardio workouts. I'm proud to say that I have awesome results from doing the workouts that I do right now, and it's very good. So remember, don't over train, because once you over train, you lift less...and when you lift less and have less energy, you get frustrated, right? Exactly, but your body is actually only tired.

I can tell you why your muscles go flat an hour or so after training. When you're pumping weights, that's when your muscles are working fully, and that's when they are the biggest! When you leave, or take a long break, they shrink a bit while they relax...it's totally natural. It happens to everyone. I can also tell you it's because you haven't been training long enough. You're still a beginner, unlike those other big, huge lifters. They never look flat! That's because they've been training for 10 years or so. You'll get there if you keep on going, but a couple months of training won't help you keep those muscles pumped ordinarily while you're not in the gym. I don't exactly know how flat you mean when you say it's flat, but normally muscles aren't as big when you're resting and relaxing.

Hi there,

Well, I'm just an intermediate but, I could help you out with the muscle flattening theory. You see, your muscles maybe be big in size, and that's because you've attained muscle mass, which is the first step in bodybuilding. But muscle mass doesn't give you cuts/definition. To attain muscle definition, you'll have to work for a few more years and concentrate on achieving muscle "density." All these pros look muscular because they've got muscle density (this is irrespective of what their muscle size is). Body fat below 7% is "unhealthy", do keep that in mind. My advice to to you is ,"Don't worry about definition, you are bound to achieve it. It takes some time though."

Take care,
Shantanu
