Training Question: What Is A Good Off Season Workout For An NAIA Football Player?

I have recently discovered your website while browsing the web and I just want to say that I think it is excellent!!!

My question is this; can you recommend an off season workout for an NAIA football player that may be somewhat challenging versus the off season workout that I have been doing? Could you please include some abdominal workouts also? Thank you very much!!!

Answer #1

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Curtis Schultz. I used to be an assistant Strength Coach at the Univ. of Colorado, Univ. of the Pacific, St. Peter's College, and a few others. I also was an assistant football coach too, on the high school and collegiate levels. Currently, I am taking a break from coaching and freelance writing for bodybuilding/fitness magazines.

Regarding an off-season program, I can offer you one, but don't you have a strength coach at your school?

Take German grade Creatine, with 1/4 cup of dextrose and one capsule of Alpha Lipoic Acid (250mg) right after your workout. Do this for 6-10 days, NO longer, then stay off for about 4 weeks and repeat again.

Workout as follows:
Warm-up: Shoulders, neck, abs-Every workout

DAY 1:
1) Power Clean 3x6

2)Parallel bar Squat 3x12

3) Bench press 1x12, 1x10, 2x8

4) Dumbbell incline press 3x10

5) Under hand lat pull down 3x10

6) Upright row 3x10-12

7)Four way neck

*) Bi's and Tri's on your own 2 exercises each with 2 sets per

DAY2
1)Close grip incline press 1x12, 2x10

2) Dumbbell flat press 3x10

3) Dumbbell rows 3x10

4)Parallel grip pull downs 3x12

5) Dumbbell front raise 2x8

6) BN military press1x10, 3x8

DAY 3
1)Hang clean 3x6

2)Leg press 3x15

3)Seated cable row 3x10

4) Straight leg deadlift 3x10

5) Side lateral raises 3x12

6) Close grip Dumbbell press 2x8-10

7) Four way neck

8) Bi's and tri's on your own

Good luck and it would have helped if we knew what position you played and other statistics like 40 time, vertical, height., and weight. Good luck and hit hard!

How would you change the program to better suit a player playing safety. I am 16 years old and play high school football. I am 5'6" and can run a 4.9, 40m. This my first year of senior ball and i want to get best prepared as possible. Also can you recommend an conditioning program for the off season or know any good link to ones.

Thanks,
Darren B.
