Weight Training

My nephew is 10 years old and a cancer survivor. He had whole body radiation and a bone marrow transplant when he was 4. He is a little light for his age and is in a youth football league and would like to gain some muscle and weight. Is weight training OK for him at this age? If so, what type of routine can you recommend?

I think at his age he shouldn't think about weight training for the simple fact his body isn't through growing yet. What I mean is he's about to hit puberty and that's when you pack on muscle you will keep for the rest of your life. So weight training which works on catabolic principles could stunt his growth permanently. He should start around the age of 16-18. For now I recommend calisthenics (pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups,etc.).

I would agree 100% with answer #1. I would just make sure he gets a good diet and only use "body weight" exercises, i.e. push-ups, pull-ups, dips etc. I would also interject that perhaps you would want to keep him from going to complete failure as that is when most of the muscle fiber break down occurs, which in adults, promotes muscle growth.
