Training Tip: My Injured Muscle Didn't Stop Hurting Until I Started Working It Out Again.

I am a 17 year old male, and have been working out on a regular basis for the last 4 or 5 years. I have had a great many injuries and strains in this time and have come to realize a few things about myself and maybe others. In the early part of last year, I noticed an aching in my right shoulder and upper back area. Suspecting that the pain could be related to training, I decided to lay off for a few days. Days turned in to months, and after all this time, the pain still wouldn't fade. Although I was still training, the drop in reps and days I would spend in the gym had an effect on my weight, my strength and my self esteem. After a month and half, I had seen a doctor on four separate occasions, with no luck. This was starting to become a real worry.

After a further 2 weeks, I decided to try again. I went back to my original routine and began to push my self and my shoulder like nothing was wrong. To my surprise, after only one session, the pain had begun to lift. I carried on like this for the rest of the week, and inside of five days the pain was gone.

Muscle is, in some respects, very much like bone. If you break a bone, you must rest while it regenerates and rebuilds itself. However, when the bone is fully recovered, the outer layer is actually thicker and stronger than it was in the first place. Muscles can work in the same way. When the pain in my shoulder first came, I guess I had pulled it, or at worst maybe ripped it. After giving it time to heal, the pain wouldn't go away because the muscle had become lame and inactive. In this weakened state, the dull ache carried on. Once I began to work on the muscle again, it built back up to the original level very quickly. Now that the muscle is fixed up and healthy, it is actually stronger than it was before. I have since been told by specialists that the liklihood of suffering the same injury again is very small. I can now train without fear of my weak shoulder, or to be more accurate, my more powerful shoulder.

I don't know if this can be of help to anyone else, but I would like to hope so.

Finally, I would just like to say that I'm no doctor, and if you should injure yourself, you should always seek professional help. You never know how serious it could be.
