In all my years of training, I've found that there is no 'magic' training routine that will GUARANTEE growth. As someone had pointed out earlier, it is true that growth happens outside the gym. What you do inside the gym, then, is simple: you work. You don't have to work like an ox from dusk till dawn either. You have to work smart.
The first thing you have to do is define a goal for yourself; what do you want? Secondly, maintain a healthy diet that ensures your muscles are receiving the proper amount of vitamins and nutrients they need to grow. Thirdly, depending on your goal (if you want strictly muscle mass, avoid excess exercise as it will burn of calories that could be used for muscle building), exercise regularly. Finally, you need to give your muscles time to mend and recuperate.
I'm not trying to tell you guys how to run your workouts, but I think these four points that I've listed are mandatory for any bodybuilding success. As for your routine, you'll have to play trial and error until you find one that truly suits your body and your needs. If I had any advice, other than that to offer you, it would be to keep various training routines and hop around sometimes between them. You'll know why when you hit a dreaded sticking point.
I remember someone saying that you should use a rest/pause-type method all the time. (Rest/pause is lifting a weight that gives you great difficulty once, rest for a minute, do it again, and repeat your reps). As a proven fact, the more repetitions you perform per exercise, the more muscle fibers you stimulate. The more muscle fibers you stimulate, the more they grow. The key to body building is Patience, Persistence and Progression. If you try too hard to shock a muscle or to give it a jolt, you could end up with an injury, so be careful. No matter what your goals are, how you work your schedule or who you are, remember: Patience, Persistence, Progression. Set goals, eat right, exercise regularly, rest well.
