Consumer Review: I Used To Be A GNC Assistant Manager And I Couldn't Get Myself To Push Some Of Their Worthless Weight Gainers Just To Get A Commission.

I started working at a corporate owned GNC store in 1989. I worked there until 1990, at which time I left to become an assistant manager with a franchised GNC. I stayed until 1994. The weight gainers were an absolute joke!!! I was embarrassed to sell these huge containers of powder that cost an arm and leg and only gave you about 5 servings. What a rip off to the customers! And even though these were amongst the products that had the little green stickers on them that identified them as COMMISSIONED ITEMS, I just didn't feel right pushing them! (Does GNC still tag commissioned items with those little stickers?)

I don't have a lot of respect for GNC. They don't even try to hire quality, knowledgeable people (they can't, because they don't want to have to pay a decent wage), so they hire CASHIERS!!! I had to take the initiative myself and learn as much as I could about the health food/bodybuilding industry. I never felt good about working there, even when I got a lot of praise from customers about my product knowledge, because the only way I could make a decent wage there was to push whatever was a commissioned item and I couldn't bring myself to do it much. In fact, I had to speak to the Franchise owner and ask for a larger base salary and in return forfeited part of my commissions.

So, GNC shoppers, be careful. I had coworkers who pushed whatever was the biggest commissioned item. It wouldn't matter to them if it was something that would actually help you or was specific to your needs or not, they wanted the commission. Oh, and by the way, the word "commission" sounds like a chunk of change, when in fact these "commissions" ranged from 25 cents to $5.00 and only applied to a very few select items in the store.
