Whey

For those living in the US west or certain eastern states like NJ and CT, Trader Joe's gourmet goodies stores have a great, inexpensive whey protein powder, at less than half the cost of the top brands. TJ's also make a soy protein powder [gritty], and an egg + protein powder [tastes good but gets very thick very fast, like MetRx, so you have to gulp it quick].
I've gained 30 lbs. of muscle in the last 18 months using the whey protein and Trader Joe's Creatine, also inexpensive. The chocolate flavor tastes great, and it doesn't thicken up. Two and a half scoops in a glass of milk equals 50 grams of protein.
