Training Question: What Can I Do To Strengthen My Upper Back After Recovering From A Slipped Disk?

I'm 37 year old male and was in the police academy where I slipped a disc in my upper back (apx T-2 /T-3) during training. I temporarily lost feeling in my left arm . It returned after approximately 24 hours and has not been a problem since. What can I do to strengthen the area and improve my over all fitness to get back into the academy.

My advice to you, and I wouldn't take any other advice than this, is to go to a fully qualified and licensed physical therapist. Ask your primary doctor for a referral. I have been lifting for about 10 years and have made great gains in back musculature and strength and I could give you a number of great exercises. However, it would be unethical of me (and anyone else) to recommend and foolish of you to do anything without a FULLY QUALIFIED physical therapist instructing and guiding you. They are trained to deal with cases like yours. NO ONE IN A HEALTH CLUB IS QUALIFIED TO DO THAT NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY! To lose sensation in an arm from a back injury is very serious. Resistance training, if done incorrectly or with an injury, is extremely dangerous.

Good luck and remember that safety comes first.
